LondonTown.com | Article imageTapa Room @ The Providores

109 Marylebone High Street, Marylebone

The downstairs Tapa room of this New Zealand fusion food establishment is an ideal setting for an original and healthy brunch - providing you can get in! So popular is the Providores on the weekends that there are often queues streaming out onto the pavement outside - even in the bleak mid winter. It's a sign of the place's delightful cooking that people are prepared to wait.

Inside may be a little cramped, but the staff are super efficient and attentive, never rushing you even if hungry punters are banging on the door to get in. The reason for its popularity is, of course, the divine food: grilled sardines on roast tomato bruschetta, grilled chorizo on a courgette and potato gratin with a soft boiled egg, French toast stuffed with banana and pecans with streaky bacon - to name but a few. In short, the inventive ingredients on show put our British breakfasts to shame. But if it is a fry up that you want, then the Providores also offers perhaps the most flavoursome and healthy fry-ups in town - indescribably tasty. Oh, and did we mention that The Times critic Giles Coran once said the place served "the best coffee in England" (from our experience, the flat-whites are best). Given the choice, we'd come here every week. It's that good.

LondonTown.com | Article imageBistrotheque

23-27 Wadeson Street, Bethnal Green

Despite the minimalist warehouse lightning white interiors, brunch in Bistrotheque is always a colourful affair. Staff are dressed dapperly, resident pianist Xavior beats out a meaty selection of pop classics on a baby grand piano ladened with weekend newspapers and magazines for you to pick and chose from, while the menu draws from an array of dinner dishes alongside breakfast classics such as Eggs Benedict.

Combined with a peek into nearby Vyner Street's numerous private art galleries or with a stroll along the canal towards Victoria Park, a Bistrotheque brunch comes heartily recommended. You feel special, the place gives good vibes, the food is tip-top and the whole curious set-up will have you eager to come back for more - and not just to gawp at the rather lewd murials in the loos.

LondonTown.com | Article imageOttolenghi

287 Upper Street, Islington

Head to Ottolenghi on Upper Street for what the readers of the Observer Food Monthly voted their "finest breakfast in town". Fresh, inventive and bursting with flavour, the food on the menu is enough to rouse anyone out of bed early on a Sunday.

It's breakfast cannelloni-bean stew with bacon, sausage and a fried egg sitting resplendent on top is quite something, as is the buffalo mozzarella and potato tortilla served warm with a zingy red-pepper salsa. Traditionalists can run the gamut of fresh fruit, Greek yoghurt, granola and pastry options, while the cinnamon French toast (made with soft brioche) and smoked salmon with scrambled eggs come heartily recommended.

The Islington outlet is the second opened by former Israeli academic Yotam Ottolenghi, who founded the flagship store in Notting Hill back in 2002. Two others now exist, in Holland Park and Belgravia. LondonTown.com | Article imageThe Breakfast Club

31 Camden Passage, Islington

Tucked away down the hip Camden Passage is this American-style Breakfast diner which offers classics such as cinnamon apple toast, pancakes with maple syrup, eggs Benedict and fruit smoothies. If you're brave, go for the full American with streaky bacon, hash browns, sausages and pancakes.

It's advisable to get in as early as possible on the weekends because the place gets rather busy. Many say The Breakfast Club has become a victim of its immense popularity, with food arriving late, without a smile and in a cramped room. But when it all comes together it really hits the spot. One added bonus: the place has a license so you can enjoy a Bloody Mary if you fancy the hair of the dog. The flagship establishment is located in Soho, 33 D'Arblay Street.

Raoul's is a trendy café/deli in Maida Vale renowned for its celebrity clientele and delicious all-day brunch menu, which reels in the crowds on the weekend. It's not cheap, but the range of eggs and omelettes is feted as the best in town by many, while the French toast and bacon and chorizo tortilla hits the mark too.

Such is the popularity, it gets rather busy on the weekends - and many say the service suffers accordingly - but faithful local regulars still return for the "yellowest eggs this side of Tuscany" in their droves. Combined with a walk along the canal in Little Venice, eggs Florentine and a trademark delicious smoothie at Raoul's can be the perfect way to start the weekend. This Italian café and delicatessen is ideally placed on the pedestrianised Duke of York Square just off the bustling Kings Road. And if you're not sure what to order, just go and peer over the vast deli counter to help make up your mind. But be sure to have at least a coffee - the special roasted Machiavelli blend is quite a treat.
